Why is Practicing Important?
If you want to become a better dancer, you will NEED to practice! Dancing is a skill that not only requires knowledge but sufficient practice.
Think of the times when you had exams. Did you want to do well? If so, what did you have to do to prepare? Study right? The more you study, the more familiar you become with the topics.
Now think of your dancing like an exam. We prepare by practicing. Practicing will give you muscle memory! The more consistently you practice the more muscle memory you have. You will then find the dancing more “natural.”
Depending on how far you want to take your skill level determines the sufficient amount of practice you need in order to reach the next level.
Talk to your dance instructor, or see our recommendations below. Remember what the pro's always say “practice, makes perfect.”
Practicing Do’s and Don’ts:
-Do repeat your practice material, to build muscle memory
-Do learn the technique and try to apply where possible
-Do build good habits by practicing the correct movements taught in class
-Do try to dance your part on your own.
-Do keep good floor etiquette when dancing with other around.
-Do keep a consistent practice schedule.
-Do stay positive! A good attitude can go a long way.
-Don’t blame your partner for something that goes wrong on the dance floor
-Don’t get upset and raise your voice
-Don’t purposely try to create difficulties for each other
Just remember whatever material you’re working on, some things will come easier than others. Don’t be discouraged, stay focused, remain positive, work hard with your partner or by yourself, and enjoy the learning process. The little bits of progress you make will make a big difference down the road.
